Transforming Learning One Student at a Time

Because learning should make sense, feel good, and last beyond the session.

About Me

Hi, I’m Serewaya Latif, the founder of Practica Tutoring.

Over the past seven years, I’ve had the privilege of working with students across a wide range of grade levels, subject areas, and learning needs. My experience includes tutoring through school boards and organizations including the Durham District School Board, Durham Catholic District School Board, and the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. I’ve supported students from Grade 2 to Grade 12 in math, science, English, and Spanish, each with their own goals, challenges, and learning styles

Over the years, I’ve noticed a gap in traditional tutoring. To make a lasting impact, we need to focus not just on getting the right answer, but on how students think through problems. When we prioritize process over memorization, we build the critical thinking skills students need to thrive—both in the classroom and beyond.

That’s why I created Practica Tutoring: to offer an alternative. A space where students are guided through a personalized, thoughtful approach to learning. One that connects theory to practice, and correctness to deeper understanding.

Currently, I’m pursuing my Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. I bring this technical, problem-solving mindset to every session, blending structured methodology with curiosity-driven learning. With each student, my goal is to not only build academic success, but to foster the skills and confidence that carry far beyond the classroom.

How we turn goals into real learning progress.

How we turn goals into real learning.

01 Initial Consultation

We start with a free 15-minute call to get to know the student, their goals, learning style, and current challenges. This helps us build a strong foundation for personalized support.

02 Pre-Session Form

Before each session, students receive a short form to share any questions, concerns, or goals. They can also upload homework, assignments, or topics they want to focus on. Whether they need help with current material or want to get ahead, I design each session based on their needs.

03 Personalized Lesson Plan

I create a custom learning plan for every session. This may include study guides, Anki flashcards, curated practice problems, or hands-on activities tailored to the student’s subject and goals.

04 In Session: The 1–2–3 Learning Approach

  • Model: I walk through a sample problem step-by-step while the student takes notes.

  • Guide: We solve the next problem together, with the student leading the way.

  • Apply: The student tries a problem independently, then we reflect on their thought process to refine understanding and boost confidence.

This approach helps students move from passive observation to active application. I always take time to explain the why, using real-world examples and connecting concepts to topics the student finds interesting and easy to relate to.

05 Ongoing Support & Progress Tracking

After each session, I update the student’s personalized learning page with progress notes, feedback, suggested next steps, and study materials. This helps students stay focused between sessions and allows parents to check in on progress as well.
